00:0-1 Hello everyone . It is nancy taylor here . And
00:01 in this video we're going over exactly what I would
00:04 do if I was starting to teach online today .
00:07 Five years ago I was looking for work from home
00:10 and I fell into teaching online and it has been
00:13 the best journey . It has been such a blessing
00:16 to me . And so with the experience I've had
00:19 and with the community that I've been able to build
00:21 and connect with , I feel like I have a
00:23 lot of advice for those that are getting started today
00:26 . I've had other teachers reach out and ask me
00:28 , what would you recommend or what would you do
00:30 if you were starting ? I've also had other comment
00:33 on Youtube and asked the same question . So in
00:36 this video we're going over exactly what I would do
00:39 if I was starting to teach online today , wanting
00:41 to work from home . And there are so many
00:44 options that I'm really excited to dive into this video
00:47 Now , this video might be a perfect fit for
00:48 you . Or maybe you know if someone who's wanting
00:50 to work from home who's wanting to teach specifically teach
00:54 from home and this could be a good video that
00:56 you recommend to them . So with no further ado
00:58 let's get into the video number one , you have
01:01 to research the companies . So there are so many
01:04 companies now when I started I started with V .
01:06 I . P . Kid and there were not a
01:08 lot of companies I found out on indeed dot com
01:11 . I thought it was too good to be true
01:12 because all of a sudden I was getting paid to
01:14 work from home . I had tried to three I
01:16 think three other companies that weren't online sl companies but
01:20 they were work from home jobs . It was like
01:22 $13 a week for this contracted position to do all
01:24 this admin work , it was just not worth it
01:27 . And so when I fell into teaching english as
01:29 a second language online , specifically for V . I
01:31 . P . Kid is where I started . I
01:33 was just blown away . I was so excited I
01:35 had to share with everyone . And since that so
01:38 five years ago many companies have popped up and there's
01:41 different platforms , different solutions , just so many options
01:45 that it can be overwhelming , so you might have
01:47 fallen into the rabbit hole of what should I do
01:50 . There's so many things to do or maybe you
01:52 have like a shiny object syndrome where you're doing something
01:55 and then oh they're doing that . I want to
01:57 try . Okay so we want to make sure that
02:00 we stay focused on not only what you qualify to
02:03 teach for but what is a good fit for you
02:05 . So I have a video link in the description
02:08 box and I also put an I . Card but
02:12 it somewhere I'll put it somewhere for you so that
02:15 you can check it out . But it's the top
02:16 companies that I currently recommend . So if you're confused
02:20 or unsure on where you want to start , I
02:22 also have a guide that will connect you to a
02:24 coach . They're all free , these are all free
02:26 resources . I want you to use them so that
02:28 you can have an easier journey than I did because
02:31 I was just figuring things out and I wish that
02:34 I had a mentor or someone who had made a
02:36 video like this that showed me exactly what path to
02:38 take as you're researching . The company is just a
02:40 couple that have been on my radar recently . Zebra
02:42 english . I have several of my own teacher students
02:44 that work for them and love that company google kids
02:47 been on my radar again , I said I worked
02:49 for V . I . P . Kid . It
02:49 was a very positive experience . There are many companies
02:52 , something that you want to pay attention to .
02:54 Is is there a minimum on hours that I have
02:56 to teach a week ? This is something very important
02:58 to me because I want to be able to open
03:01 up slots two weeks before it intimidates me to have
03:03 a consistent schedule where I'm live teaching when I'm home
03:07 by myself with two little kids that depend on the
03:09 cancellation policies . Those are things that I want to
03:11 be aware of with the specific company also pay because
03:15 with the pay I want to make sure that it
03:18 is worth the time and energy and the effort to
03:20 lesson plan . I want to make sure that my
03:23 teaching expertise is valued and that I see that valued
03:26 at what I think it should be valued , Value
03:29 , value , value , value . So those are
03:32 things I want to pay attention to . A lot
03:33 of teachers started without school in March of 2020 and
03:37 it exploded and then maybe the booking slow down a
03:39 bit . But I also see that is a great
03:41 option because you get to build the skills to build
03:45 a brand of your own , to build an audience
03:48 To create curriculum . So out school gives you a
03:51 lot more freedom and then just takes a chunk of
03:53 your revenue . They take 30%, , but you are
03:56 building the skills and that's what each of these companies
03:59 will give you tools , not only to learn how
04:01 to teach online , give you experience in branding ,
04:03 give you experience in engagement with online camera , whatever
04:07 it may be , you are learning skills that you're
04:10 just going to take in your backpack . Hey ,
04:13 let's go to this next adventure . You're gonna take
04:16 those with you , which is amazing . Okay ,
04:18 so first do your research , pick one company .
04:21 Don't do all of them now down the road .
04:23 Maybe you'll have two or three that you work for
04:26 . And I recommend that because if I only rely
04:28 on one source of income , if that contracts taken
04:31 away , if I have too many teacher no shows
04:33 if I have too many I . T . Issues
04:34 Any of that , I don't want to rely solely
04:36 on one source of income , make sure that you
04:39 have multiple sources of income and that could be multiple
04:41 companies . # two . Do you like how I
04:43 turned you ? Like that subtle change background ? I'm
04:48 laughing because I literally was like number two , Number
04:53 two , you want to find a mentor . Now
04:56 there is a learning curve whether you are already teaching
04:59 , maybe you're teaching the mainstream classroom , maybe you've
05:01 taught in sunday school or maybe you've talked for your
05:04 community , whatever it may be . There is a
05:06 learning curve to not only teaching online , but specifically
05:09 for if it's sl there's a learning curve or maybe
05:12 it's just the online aspect , how do I now
05:15 engage my students online ? It's a little bit different
05:18 , there is a learning curve , so accept that
05:20 and say yes , I need a coach to help
05:22 me . So you can find either a mentor that
05:24 works for that company . Again , I have those
05:27 coaches linked in that guide , the free guide for
05:30 you to look at and use if you're feeling lost
05:33 at all , so you can see which company is
05:35 a good fit , it has a blurb of the
05:36 company and then it will tell you a coach that
05:38 you can reach out to . Your mentor is not
05:41 only going to help you with that learning curve of
05:44 learning the strategies and learning how to teach for that
05:47 specific platform , but they also should be educated in
05:50 the application process so knowing okay here is the first
05:53 step , the second step not just to hold your
05:55 hand but just to give you that confidence and reassurance
05:58 that you're in the right place and I wish that
06:00 I had a mentor when I started , I figured
06:01 it all out on my own but I feel like
06:03 the standard for qualifying to teach for the companies was
06:07 not mere not even close to where it is now
06:10 , it was like yeah we'll take you keep ,
06:12 speak english sweet and now it's like very thorough ,
06:16 very intense rubrics . I have been on the other
06:19 side of doing interviews , I have done trainings and
06:22 so I know exactly what they're expecting and what they're
06:24 looking for and it is very thorough . So just
06:27 make sure that you look for a mentor . Don't
06:29 stop and say it's too hard . I can't do
06:31 it . There's too many expectations of me . No
06:33 , take on the challenge because you can do it
06:35 . You most definitely can do it . I can
06:37 do it , you can do it . You just
06:38 need a mentor step . Number three is to become
06:41 familiar with the best strategies and teaching practices . Teaching
06:46 . We're back here to the first background and this
06:48 is a plant . You're like what ? It's okay
06:51 . So make sure that you are familiar with the
06:53 best practices to teach on line . I'm going to
06:56 give you five right here , but I just want
06:58 to let you know , I have an entire 10
07:00 video series here on this Youtube channel that goes through
07:04 the teaching strategies , the best practices , all for
07:06 free . So I'll leave the link below for you
07:08 just so you know , it's very simple to go
07:11 through and see exactly what those strategies are . So
07:13 you do have a little bit of homework . Again
07:15 , this falls into learning how to teach online and
07:18 the best way to teach for your specific students .
07:20 So number one is your setup , I need to
07:23 make sure that I have a good setup . So
07:25 you can have an external webcam or you can have
07:27 your built in webcam . I would have a headset
07:30 that has this little bad boy thing and then it
07:33 puts it right in front of your mouth so I
07:35 can hear you so much better . It doesn't pick
07:37 up all the background noise if baby wakes up .
07:40 And then I also need to make sure have good
07:41 lighting . So whether I have a lamp that I
07:44 start with and it has a white shade or maybe
07:46 you invest in lighting , that's something where I would
07:48 invest and you can get photography lights again . I
07:51 have all my equipment . I always leave it like
07:53 below my videos . But that's something that I would
07:55 purchase as you get going . But could I start
07:57 with what I already have yet ? Put a lamp
07:59 in front of you . Not a direct light bulb
08:01 , Have it masked with some sort of paper .
08:03 Is that a fire hazard ? So it sort of
08:06 parchment ? Just have a white shade on it .
08:08 Okay . And then you can go from there .
08:10 Now you also want to make sure that you have
08:12 good internet . This can be something that could give
08:14 you anxiety if you're like , I don't know ,
08:16 they can't hear me . My internet out . It
08:17 could really cause up to your classes , you could
08:21 be like , it was the first class ever because
08:23 your internet was causing issues . So call up your
08:26 internet , ask what you're downloading . Upload speeds are
08:28 and make sure that it's up to par with the
08:30 company that you're teaching for . Okay , check ,
08:33 check , check Number two is to know the teaching
08:35 strategies . Again , I have that playlist of 10
08:38 videos that go over ssl teaching strategies as well as
08:41 technology and engagement , all that good stuff . So
08:44 make sure I know the teaching strategies . Now let's
08:46 say that I'm not teaching english as a second language
08:48 . I'm teaching a class on out school . I
08:50 need to understand the strategies for teaching online , so
08:53 I need to understand , I need to stay inside
08:55 the screen . I need to have engagement high five
08:57 . I need to utilize the chat box . So
08:59 it's a little bit different than when I'm in the
09:01 mainstream classroom and I can walk around and check small
09:03 groups o on the zoom classroom there in breakout rooms
09:07 and I'm gonna go check in and poke in and
09:09 ask questions . But I definitely need to practice .
09:13 I need to become familiar with the online teaching strategies
09:16 . Number three is to know your learners . So
09:19 will you be working with K through six ? Will
09:21 you be working with high school students ? Will you
09:22 be working with language learners ? I need to know
09:25 that because if I'm working with language learners sl students
09:29 that are learning english as a second language , I
09:31 need to learn those strategies to speak slow to use
09:33 crops to use . Number will communication with my hands
09:36 doing this cucaracha . I need to make sure that
09:39 I understand those strategies specific for my learner . Let's
09:44 say that I have a learner that I'm teaching a
09:46 beginner level or I'm teaching intermediate or advanced . I
09:49 need to make sure that I understand my learner's needs
09:52 . This can happen with a pre assessment . Something
09:54 I love to do when I get into the classroom
09:56 is to ask a question about the topic . So
09:59 if it was about let's say animals and it was
10:01 about arctic animals I would say do you know what
10:04 an arctic animal is ? And if it was a
10:06 young student I would use T . P . R
10:08 . Do you know what an arctic mm animal is
10:13 ? And then I would see what if they know
10:15 now if it was maybe a student that speaks english
10:18 I would ask the chat box , show me on
10:20 a scale of 1 to 5 . How do you
10:22 feel about drawing with pencil ? So it's a class
10:25 we're teaching sketching . I would ask them five .
10:28 You feel really good about it one , you're just
10:30 getting started but you want to build the skill so
10:33 let me know in the chat box where you at
10:35 today . So pre assessment is so beautiful because I
10:38 immediately know where my learners at now are they always
10:41 going to be accurate ? No , there can be
10:43 pre assessments or an actual test that you can use
10:46 . But that's just something that you can utilize right
10:48 before you get going because sometimes you are not repeat
10:51 seeing the same student , it might be a new
10:53 student every week and that's okay because you're learning ,
10:57 they're learning and that's all that matters . Number four
11:00 is to practice practice , practice practice . I ran
11:04 my first zoom session in january . That's a year
11:06 ago because now it's january 2021 it was january 2020
11:10 and I remember being so overwhelmed like I thought I
11:13 was just going to jump on you there , I've
11:15 been teaching online . But it was a new platform
11:17 that I had not practice . I didn't know how
11:19 to accept people in the waiting room . People were
11:21 raising their hand , I was like I don't put
11:22 their hand down , I didn't know how to do
11:24 it and I didn't make that mistake again . I
11:25 made it once and I was like I'm gonna go
11:27 read all the tutorials on zoom , I'm going to
11:29 go practice , I want to call my family hey
11:31 you you and you were going on zoom because I'm
11:33 gonna put you in breakout rooms and we're going to
11:35 practice . So make sure that you practice . Don't
11:38 just wing it and say , oh I've taught for
11:40 30 years . I got this , I had that
11:42 terrible insect . I've already taught online for four years
11:46 , I can do this . It was a different
11:47 platform and it would have ran so much smoother Had
11:51 I practice , I had to reschedule that session and
11:53 say , I apologize , I'm going to reschedule this
11:55 . There were 100 teachers . I was training in
11:57 there and I rescheduled or added a bonus one because
12:01 I felt like I didn't do an adequate job of
12:02 teaching because I was struggling with the platform . I'm
12:06 so overwhelmed . What's going on chat box ? This
12:08 this blue , Okay . Practice another thing when you're
12:12 practicing , make sure I'm in the screen , make
12:14 sure I'm aware of the features . I'm aware the
12:16 chat box is going on . I'm aware of the
12:18 power point , how to show the power point ,
12:20 how to move things on the power point . If
12:22 I'm able to do that on that platform , become
12:25 familiar , will it get easier with time when I
12:27 learned the platform better and learn other things that can
12:30 enhance that classroom ? Yes , you don't need to
12:34 learn them from day one all you need to be
12:36 familiar with the basics number five and the most important
12:39 part is to have fun . Don't forget to have
12:43 fun . If you're not having fun during the process
12:46 the journey then the end result is not going to
12:49 be that rewarding , it's not going to be very
12:51 fun . It seemed like I made it okay now
12:54 what you got to keep doing that So enjoy the
12:57 journey , enjoy learning , enjoy practicing , enjoy setting
13:00 everything up because if you're not enjoying it you're going
13:03 to stay in that mindset and that even once you
13:07 hit like I'm a teacher now and I have a
13:08 full schedule and all that good stuff so make sure
13:12 that you have , But step # four is to
13:15 start . So once you choose your company , you
13:18 have found a mentor and then you've done your research
13:20 , your practice , your practicing to go through the
13:22 application process . You get to number four where you
13:25 get to start . So you apply for the company
13:28 , you may do a demo for the company .
13:29 You may send an interview video for the company .
13:31 They're all very similar after you've worked for one or
13:33 two or three companies . You're like that . It
13:35 just works for that one too , which is quite
13:39 nice because you can carry those skills . Remember the
13:41 backpack ? Yeah , come on , let's go .
13:43 Skills that I learned from the other company . I'm
13:46 going to take you with me to my next adventure
13:48 . So again , no shiny object . I'm not
13:51 switching all the time , but I want to make
13:53 sure that I recognize that what I'm doing right now
13:56 , where I'm at right now is only going to
13:58 enhance where I'm going to be in a year ,
14:00 two years , three years . All right guys ,
14:02 now that we have gone over each of those steps
14:04 to start teaching online , that is the exact journey
14:07 that I would take and if you're wondering , but
14:09 which company should I choose ? What should I do
14:12 ? I can't tell you the exact company for you
14:15 because there is a good fit for each person .
14:18 If I don't have a bachelor's degree , I might
14:20 be with a different company than someone who does .
14:23 So I could teach on out school without a bachelor's
14:25 degree , but I could not teach for V .
14:26 I . P . Kid or perhaps I don't want
14:28 to have a set schedule . Like Wells English has
14:31 a set schedule that I would have to commit to
14:33 . And so maybe I would go with go go
14:35 kid where I don't have a set schedule or maybe
14:37 I want to teach small groups and I go to
14:39 Magic ears , okay , I'm just throwing out all
14:41 these things that could change with time when you're watching
14:43 this video , they're probably all changed . But I
14:46 just need to make sure I find a good fit
14:48 for me and then just commit to it , go
14:51 for it and move forward and you won't regret it
14:54 . Now , if you're looking for a complete training
14:56 on teaching sl english as a second language online ,
14:59 I have my foundational course . It is currently 20%
15:03 off . So you want to go check the dates
15:05 for when that's available for 20% off . Down in
15:07 the description box , it has 20 videos that walk
15:11 you through from start your setup , like in detail
15:14 , I show you exactly what to use , how
15:16 to do it and then it walks you through the
15:17 teaching strategy specifically for those that are teaching english as
15:21 a second language and specifically online . You can also
15:24 cater the strategies and tips for in the mainstream classroom
15:28 . But I specifically talked to online teachers and then
15:30 it sets you up with branding with getting bookings with
15:33 technology , all that good stuff , engagement . I
15:37 give you tools for rewards . Oh , just all
15:39 of it . How to handle parents , positive feedback
15:42 discipline . You know , it's all in there ,
15:44 it's all in there and you get access to all
15:46 of it immediately . So if you want that to
15:48 four hour training , which you don't have to knock
15:50 out one day , Okay , because that's a long
15:53 time . So that's 20% off . If you want
15:55 to check it out link below . If this video
15:58 was helpful for you , please let me know by
16:00 giving me a thumbs up . That really helps me
16:02 out and knowing what videos are helpful for you .
16:04 It also helps my channel out . I really appreciate
16:06 it . I love making this free content and that
16:09 allows me to continue making it when you show up
16:11 , when you give me like when you give the
16:13 comments below , that allows me to continue to share
16:16 this free content . So I'm so grateful for you
16:18 being here and taking the time to do that .
16:20 Now . If you are interested in the next steps
16:22 of this teacher business journey , you'll see this image
16:25 here , meaning , meaning we talked about teaching online
16:28 , starting with the company building the skills there and
16:31 I'm going to be sharing with you the entire teacher
16:33 business journey in the next video . So if you're
16:36 like , what does that mean ? This is where
16:38 you get to go beyond teaching for a company ,
16:40 you get to build a brand of your own set
16:42 prices of your own . The sky is the limit
16:44 income impact influence all of those things are being enhanced
16:49 . So I'm going to go over the exact journey
16:52 to make that happen . So make sure you check
16:54 out the next video . Bye . Don't forget to
16:56 be happy , choose to be happy , not just
16:58 to be , but choose to be happy . Okay
17:01 . Bye . Okay . Yeah . Mhm .
