00:03 and learning . This is a home school pop us
00:06 States video . Yeah . In this video we are
00:11 learning about the state of Connecticut . That's right .
00:16 The state of Connecticut , the first thing we want
00:22 to figure out is where is Connecticut ? Here is
00:25 the United States map . Where is the state of
00:30 Connecticut ? Do you already know ? Where is it
00:36 ? Yeah , the state of Connecticut is up here
00:40 in the upper right hand corner of the United States
00:44 . In the far northeast , in a region of
00:47 the United States called New England , the region called
00:55 New England is in the farthest north east corner of
00:58 the United States . There are six states that belong
01:04 to this region called New England . The northernmost state
01:11 of New England is the state of maine . Then
01:16 below main is New Hampshire , then to the west
01:22 of New Hampshire is the state of Vermont . Then
01:28 below Vermont and New Hampshire is the state of massachusetts
01:34 . And then below massachusetts are two states , First
01:37 the state of Rhode island and then the state of
01:43 Connecticut Connecticut is what this video is all about .
01:46 In Connecticut is the southernmost state in the region called
01:51 New England in the northeast corner of the United States
01:56 . Mhm . Mhm . Cool . Well , now
01:58 that we know where Connecticut is , we want to
02:01 look at two nicknames of the state of Connecticut so
02:05 we can learn more about this state . Mhm .
02:09 All right . So what are Connecticut's nicknames ? What
02:12 are some other names that the state of Connecticut goes
02:15 by ? Mhm . The two nicknames we're going to
02:20 talk about that belonged to the state of Connecticut are
02:24 the Constitution state and the nutmeg state . The first
02:31 nickname is the Constitution States . So why is Connecticut
02:35 called the Constitution State ? There are two ideas of
02:41 where this nickname came from . The first explanation takes
02:47 us back to when the United States Constitution was written
02:52 back in 1787 . The United States Constitution is the
02:58 supreme law of the United States . That means there
03:06 is no law higher in the United States than the
03:09 constitution to men . Roger Sherman and Oliver Ellsworth were
03:16 representing Connecticut when they were trying to pass the constitution
03:22 . There were disagreements , so they came up with
03:26 something later called the Connecticut compromise , which helped pass
03:31 the Constitution of the United States . But the main
03:37 explanation , at least according to many people in Connecticut
03:40 , is that in 1639 , 3 Connecticut towns came
03:44 together to compile a list of rules called the fundamental
03:48 orders . This is considered the very first constitution in
03:55 North America . One of the main reasons why Connecticut
04:00 is called the Constitution State . All right , so
04:06 why is Connecticut called the nutmeg state , nutmeg is
04:12 a very strong spice that has a lot of flavor
04:16 and smells great in Connecticut . There were a lot
04:21 of people that would sell nutmeg nutmeg was not cheap
04:28 and as the legend goes , some traders and sellers
04:31 would actually make fake nutmeg out of wood and would
04:36 sell it . They would mix it in with real
04:39 nutmeg and then when the person would bring it home
04:42 and would start grading it to get the spice out
04:45 , they would just realize it was made out of
04:47 wood and they were tricked . So Connecticut was nicknamed
04:52 the nutmeg state . Yeah . Mhm . All right
04:57 . Let's look at the flag , the flag of
05:00 the state of Connecticut . The flag of Connecticut is
05:06 a blue flag that has a white shield and the
05:09 white shield has three grapevines , each with bunches of
05:14 purple grapes . Below the shield is a latin phrase
05:22 on a banner and that phrase means he who transplanted
05:26 , still sustains . It speaks to how they used
05:31 to be in England and now they are here in
05:34 the United States of America that they believe that they
05:38 would be protected and sustained , awesome . Now we
05:46 are going to locate two major places in the state
05:50 of Connecticut . First is the city of Hartford .
05:54 Hartford is the capital of Connecticut . Then further south
06:01 into the west is the city of Bridgeport . Bridgeport
06:04 is the largest city in Connecticut . Mm hmm .
06:11 All right . Here is our final question . What
06:14 is the state bird of Connecticut ? That's a good
06:17 question . What is the state bird of Connecticut ?
06:23 The state bird of Connecticut is the american robin .
06:27 The american robin . Easy to spot because of the
06:31 orange belly . What a cute birdie . Even though
06:37 it gets cold in the winter , many american robins
06:40 stay in Connecticut throughout the winter . They are tough
06:44 birds , tough birds . The american robin . Yeah
06:50 . Thanks for watching this homeschool pop video on the
06:53 state of Connecticut . The Constitution state , the nutmeg
06:58 state . Do you know of any facts about Connecticut
