03:19 | facebook , I see you there . Okay , good
03:22 | . Everything is going , so I'm going to share
03:24 | the video but and then we're going to begin .
03:27 | Okay , let's take a look at today . Then
03:30 | here today's lesson board , this is what we're going
03:33 | to cover today . So active voice and passive voice
03:36 | for completed action . So we are going to look
03:41 | first , what is active voice ? What is passive
03:43 | voice ? Then we're going to look at a lot
03:46 | of example sentences and many different situations . And we're
03:51 | going to compare the differences between active voice and passive
03:55 | voice in those cases . Okay , so if you
03:58 | have questions like should I use active here or what
04:02 | ? Why should I use passive here ? Please send
04:05 | those uh in the chat and we'll practice . Some
04:08 | people are saying this sound isn't great . I've gotten
04:11 | that message a couple of times . Let me know
04:12 | remote control desk . If everything sounds good , try
04:15 | to fix it . Okay , let's go to the
04:18 | first part of today's lesson then . So active voice
04:23 | or passive voice . Also , if you have not
04:25 | , please make sure to like this video and share
04:27 | some other people can find today's lesson . Okay ,
04:31 | let's begin . So first active voice , passive voice
04:35 | . What is this ? Let's talk about the differences
04:39 | between these . It's a little bit dark . Yeah
04:40 | . Okay . Let's talk about the differences between active
04:45 | voice and passive voice . First active voice . Let's
04:50 | begin . What is active voice ? Here are three
04:53 | example sentences . First I opened the door . Active
04:57 | voice . My roommate ate the last cookie or you
05:02 | stole my idea . Okay , these sentences are all
05:08 | active voice sentences . So what's active voice for ?
05:13 | What is happening here in each sentence here , the
05:16 | subject is the person doing the action . In this
05:21 | case I opened the door so I know the person
05:25 | who opened the door me . So that's the subject
05:29 | of the sentence in this sentence . My roommates h
05:32 | the last cookie . My roommate . The person who
05:35 | did the action is the subject of the sentence .
05:38 | Okay then you stole my idea . So the person
05:43 | stealing you in this case is the subject of the
05:46 | sentence . Okay so we use active voice when you
05:52 | want to focus on the person doing the action .
05:56 | Like in these sentences the person doing the action is
06:00 | important or when you know who did the action .
06:05 | So you need to know the person in most cases
06:08 | who did the action and when you want to be
06:12 | clear about who did what ? So when you're talking
06:17 | about responsibilities or maybe you're planning something and it's very
06:22 | important to be clear you should do this , you
06:26 | should do that and so on . When you want
06:28 | to be very clear about roles and responsibilities , you
06:32 | can use active voice to do that . So the
06:35 | subject of your sentence is the person doing the action
06:39 | . Okay so this is why uh these are the
06:43 | reasons we use active voice . Active voice . Okay
06:49 | . The person who does the action is important .
06:50 | Yes , heavier . Okay . Good . Good .
06:52 | Good . Um All right . I think those are
06:57 | all the questions Why is active voices ? David Maria
06:59 | , do you mean why is it called active voice
07:02 | ? Maybe maybe that's the question . Why is it
07:05 | called active voice ? Because the person acting you can
07:10 | this maybe you can help this can help you remember
07:12 | the person acting ? The person doing the action is
07:16 | the subject of the sentence maybe that can help you
07:19 | to remember ? Okay . Um Good . Okay ,
07:23 | I don't see other questions . So let's compare this
07:26 | to passive voice now . So passive voice ? What
07:31 | is passive voice again ? Let's look at example sentences
07:34 | . These sentences are the passive versions of these sentences
07:39 | . So here passive voice , the door was open
07:44 | , the door was opened or the last cookie was
07:49 | eaten , the last cookie was eaten and my idea
07:54 | was stolen idea store . So these sentences have the
08:00 | same basic idea as these sentences . Right ? The
08:04 | difference with these sentences is the subject here . The
08:08 | subject is the door or the last cookie or My
08:13 | idea right ? In these sentences the focus is the
08:17 | person doing the action in passive voice . Sentence is
08:22 | the focus is on the thing receiving the action .
08:26 | Okay . So why do we use passive voice ?
08:29 | Why do we need to do this ? We use
08:32 | passive voice when you want to focus on the thing
08:37 | receiving the action . You want to focus on the
08:41 | thing receiving the action . Like the door was opened
08:45 | . Who opened the door ? Maybe we don't know
08:48 | , Okay or you don't know who did the action
08:53 | or it's not important , you don't know who did
08:57 | the action or it's not important . For example ,
09:01 | the last cookie was eaten . Who ate the last
09:04 | cookie ? I don't know . Or maybe I think
09:07 | it was my roommate but I'm not sure . Okay
09:10 | . So you don't know who did it or it's
09:12 | not important . Finally , when you want to hide
09:17 | the do er of the action , you want to
09:19 | hide the doer of the action . So like my
09:22 | idea was stolen someone , someone did it who did
09:26 | it ? I don't know . Or maybe you want
09:28 | to keep a secret for someone else . You can
09:31 | use passive voice to do that . Okay , so
09:34 | these are the differences between active voice and passive voice
09:39 | . In today's lesson . I am not going to
09:41 | talk about how to make these . I have some
09:44 | lessons . I have a lot of lessons actually about
09:47 | how to make active and passive voice . So I'm
09:50 | not going to talk about that today , but you
09:53 | can search are less than archives to find some information
09:57 | . So today I'm going to use a lot of
10:00 | examples . We're going to compare lots of examples of
10:04 | these two . Uh , so you can , I
10:07 | hope make better decisions about when to use active and
10:11 | when to use passive in your daily life , at
10:14 | school or at work or at home . Okay ,
10:17 | cool . So that's part one for today . Let's
10:20 | take a quick break and then we'll go to part
10:23 | two . I'll check your questions in the live chat
10:26 | . Lots of you are sending examples . These look
10:29 | good . Um , my smartphone was stolen by someone
10:33 | says Salma Good . Okay . Cardiology says he was
10:35 | betrayed by his own best friend . Good . Uh
10:39 | , no , I thank you . Very nice comments
10:41 | as well . Uh , the students were asked to
10:43 | come earlier . Good example of everybody . Uh ,
10:47 | pre enthuses . please teach us how to use that
10:50 | with modal verbs . I'm not going to cover that
10:53 | today . Um , but maybe I can include that
10:58 | in a lesson in the future modal verbs with passive
11:00 | voice or something . We'll see . Okay , uh
11:03 | thanks for the idea . Okay , I don't see
11:05 | other questions . So uh if you missed it earlier
11:08 | there is free stuff for you from the link below
11:11 | the video . If you're watching on Youtube or above
11:14 | the video , if you're watching on facebook , I
11:17 | will pick one to show you . But basically you
11:20 | can choose your own topics . Oh , there's a
11:23 | romance one here . I haven't shown you in a
11:25 | while . You can pick one of these pds to
11:29 | download . Practice , Print out . You can review
11:32 | new words , learn new expressions . So there are
11:35 | vocabulary words Yes , but also questions , conversation points
11:40 | on the back . So check this out . Uh
11:42 | you can download all of these . I think there's
11:44 | a lot like Maybe 30 now or so . So
11:48 | check these out . There's a business english one as
11:50 | well too . I know many of you are studying
11:53 | for work . This includes uh business meeting phrases uh
11:57 | and some other ideas like job titles and so on
12:00 | . So check it out from above or below the
12:03 | video uh to get that you need your name and
12:06 | an email address and that's it . Okay let's go
12:10 | to part two for today's lesson . Also if you
12:13 | haven't please make sure to hit the like button so
12:16 | other people can find this lesson and share to .
12:19 | Yeah okay let's go to part two and part three
12:23 | really . Uh So next the the part two and
12:27 | part three for today are going to focus on lots
12:31 | of examples . We're going to compare the active and
12:35 | passive versions of sentences and explain why you might want
12:40 | to use one more than the other . Okay ,
12:43 | so let's take a look . So I've put to
12:48 | explain this . I've put in black the situation .
12:52 | So a sample situation you can think about and then
12:56 | in blue will be active voice . In red will
12:59 | be passive voice . So we're going to compare them
13:03 | and talk about why you should choose one . Okay
13:07 | , so for example if you are at work or
13:10 | at school or maybe home after you finish a task
13:15 | after you finish a task , a task is some
13:18 | responsibility . Something you need to do After you finish
13:22 | a task like a report . Maybe you write a
13:24 | report . Active voice . Is I finished the report
13:28 | , I finished the report . Can write an email
13:31 | or tell your manager passive voice . The report was
13:35 | finished . The report was finished . Okay , so
13:38 | when should you use active ? When should you use
13:41 | passive ? Both are 100 correct . Both expressed the
13:44 | same idea . An active voice sentence here , uh
13:50 | , communicates I did this thing . So if it's
13:53 | important to you to express that you like you want
13:57 | the credit , you want to show responsibility for this
14:01 | task . You can use active voice to do that
14:05 | . If it's not so important to explain who made
14:09 | the report . If it's like just a regular task
14:12 | or somehow , maybe it was part of a team
14:15 | effort . Maybe you can say the report was finished
14:18 | or maybe if you're worried about the report , if
14:21 | there's something bad in the report , you can say
14:24 | the report was finished and try to remove yourself from
14:29 | the statement . Okay , so again , both are
14:32 | correct . But I finished the report is like look
14:36 | at me , I did this thing . That's the
14:37 | difference . Okay then let's go to the next one
14:42 | . I'm looking for your questions too . If you
14:44 | have questions , send them in the chat . I'll
14:46 | try to check live . Okay , next one .
14:50 | How about when you have not finished a task yet
14:55 | ? So maybe you expect to finish a task but
14:59 | it's not done yet . Active Voice . You can
15:02 | say I have not finished the report yet yet .
15:08 | You can include , I haven't finished the report or
15:10 | haven't finished the report yet . Passive voice . The
15:14 | report has not been finished yet . The report has
15:18 | not been finished yet . Okay , so when should
15:22 | I use this again ? When you want to show
15:26 | your responsibility ? I have not finished the report yet
15:31 | . It's me . I am the reason the report
15:34 | is not done . You can use active voice .
15:37 | So if you want to take responsibility you can use
15:40 | active boys here . I have not finished the report
15:43 | yet . Okay , passive voice then . The report
15:48 | has not been finished yet . Oh , okay .
15:50 | But I don't mention me in the sentence . Just
15:54 | the report has not been finished yet . So my
15:56 | responsibility is maybe not so clear . So this is
16:02 | a great example of a situation where we tend to
16:05 | choose passive . We tend to choose passive more in
16:10 | kind of negative situations like I didn't finish something or
16:15 | I broke something or I may be caused a problem
16:18 | when we want to kind of hide from the responsibility
16:24 | a little bit . We use passive voice to do
16:27 | that with our words . So the report has not
16:30 | been finished yet . It's totally true . And I
16:33 | , but I don't want to make it clear that
16:35 | it's my fault . Okay , So this is a
16:38 | situation where we might use passive . Okay . All
16:44 | right . Okay . I don't see other questions .
16:47 | So I'm going to continue next one when you're working
16:50 | in a team . So , uh in a team
16:53 | at school or in a team at work or hobby
16:56 | team , let's say your team when your team creates
17:00 | something great . When your team creates something great ,
17:03 | like a new product , for example . Okay ,
17:07 | so , active voice . Our team is the subject
17:11 | . Our team made an incredible products , incredible means
17:15 | very , very good , amazing . Excellent . Our
17:18 | team made an incredible product , passive an incredible product
17:25 | was made , incredible product was made . Okay ,
17:28 | so what's the difference here in this sentence ? In
17:31 | this pair ? Our team is the focus in the
17:34 | active sentence . So if you are trying to create
17:38 | a good team environment , like uh , everybody is
17:42 | working together . You want to give your team a
17:45 | compliment or you want to note your team's great work
17:50 | , you can use active voice to do that .
17:52 | Our team made an incredible product . If however you
17:57 | want to use this sentence . An incredible product was
18:01 | made . You don't want to focus on your team
18:04 | , You want to focus on the product . So
18:07 | maybe you've seen a sentence like this on like uh
18:13 | sales website . So like on a smartphone product information
18:17 | sheet . Yeah , the focus is on the product
18:20 | , right ? Not the person , not the group
18:23 | of people who made it . So this is the
18:26 | nuance in difference between active voice and passive voice .
18:30 | Okay . Mm . Oh , David Reno says active
18:34 | voice and passive voice . Only when you're talking about
18:36 | the past . No , no . Not only when
18:38 | you're talking about the past in today's lesson . Yes
18:41 | , I'm focusing on active voice and passive voice for
18:45 | complete completed actions . Okay . All right . Uh
18:50 | Giancarlo , how do we know for sure if it's
18:53 | passive or active ? Also ? Happy birthday . How
18:55 | do you know ? It's my birthday . That's amazing
18:57 | . Active passive voice or active voice . Um I'm
19:01 | not talking about the differences between the two today ,
19:05 | but look for that was and uh let's see where
19:10 | is it here was plus verb . So like this
19:14 | this is a bad example . Was made this before
19:17 | your verb here . This is a good sign of
19:19 | passive voice . Yeah , I have a lot of
19:22 | videos about that on the channel , but that's a
19:25 | quick hint . Okay , Okay , let's go to
19:30 | the next part . Um All right . The next
19:33 | one is this one ? Oh , very , very
19:36 | important one here . The next situation when someone makes
19:40 | a mistake , when someone makes a mistake . So
19:43 | you or another person , for example , Alicia wrote
19:48 | the wrong information in the spreadsheet . Alicia wrote the
19:52 | wrong information in the spreadsheet . What's a spreadsheet ?
19:55 | A spreadsheet is if you know , Excel , Excel
19:58 | files , that those documents are called spreadsheets . Okay
20:03 | , Alicia wrote the wrong information in the spreadsheet .
20:05 | Active voice , passive voice . The wrong information was
20:10 | written in the spreadsheet . So the difference in the
20:15 | active voice sentence I'm saying it was Alicia . Alicia
20:18 | wrote the wrong information in the spreadsheet . Oh no
20:21 | , it was her . I saw her . So
20:23 | I'm very direct . Right ? It was you in
20:27 | this sentence . The wrong information was written in the
20:29 | spreadsheet . It's like a B . I don't know
20:33 | who did it or I know it was Alicia but
20:37 | I don't want to make her feel bad so you
20:41 | can use this to express . I noticed a problem
20:45 | . I want to express the problem , but it's
20:48 | not important to say it was you so much less
20:52 | direct . Okay . All right . Um Okay ,
20:57 | so this is the first part Virginia products . As
21:02 | can I say , an incredible product has been made
21:07 | . That's totally correct . An incredible product has been
21:09 | made sure that's grammatically correct . Okay , uh Rianta
21:13 | says can we watch this lesson again on your Youtube
21:16 | channel ? Yes . This video is being broadcast live
21:19 | on Youtube and facebook at the same time . So
21:22 | you can watch after as well . Okay . Um
21:26 | Good . I'll take one more short break and then
21:28 | we'll go to the last group of examples . The
21:32 | last group is just three examples situations . I included
21:36 | some kind of interesting expressions that are kind of common
21:40 | that we'll talk about so quickly if you missed it
21:43 | . There is free stuff for you from the link
21:45 | . Below the video . If you're watching on Youtube
21:48 | or above the video , if you're watching on facebook
21:52 | , these pdf . So you can use to practice
21:56 | vocabulary and phrases check that out . True . So
22:00 | if you haven't checked yet , if you haven't checked
22:02 | in a while please have a look . The team
22:05 | is adding new stuff all the time . Like I
22:08 | can't keep track . There's a bunch of new stuff
22:11 | for conversations uh and like everyday survival expressions too .
22:15 | So check it out . Okay so I want to
22:18 | go to part three . I'll say if you haven't
22:20 | please make sure to hit the like button and share
22:23 | this video so other people can find today's lesson .
22:27 | Okay ? Um Other questions . Yeah people how do
22:32 | I get that ? Yeah Check the link if you're
22:34 | on Youtube . Ahmed go to the link below the
22:38 | video in the Youtube description . Okay let's go to
22:43 | the last part of today's lesson . The final part
22:47 | I included some kind of interesting expressions that you might
22:52 | not understand at first . So let's cover these .
22:55 | This situation very useful when you want to ask someone
23:01 | or someone asks you about a task , an errand
23:05 | and assignment whatever . O . J . And thanks
23:08 | very much on Youtube . Um So when you want
23:11 | to ask someone for an update about something like let's
23:16 | look at this short conversation here A . Says any
23:20 | updates on my dinner reservation . So A . Asked
23:24 | be to make a dinner reservation . Yeah please make
23:27 | a dinner reservation A wants information they want to know
23:31 | about updates . Are there any updates on my dinner
23:35 | reservation ? B . Says active or passive ? Which
23:40 | one should I choose ? Uh So active voice is
23:43 | I took care of it . I took care of
23:46 | it . Do you know this this part ? To
23:48 | take care of something To take care of something means
23:51 | like to be nice to something like your pet to
23:53 | give it food . But it also means to complete
23:57 | a task to take care of something . Yeah ,
24:01 | B could also say passive voice . It's been taken
24:07 | care of , it's been taken care of , which
24:11 | means the task has been completed . Who did it
24:17 | ? Maybe it was me . So I included this
24:20 | one right here . This sentence . It's been taken
24:22 | care of Because you see this expression a lot in
24:26 | movies , especially action movies . If you like action
24:29 | movies often like the bad guy will ask his team
24:34 | to do something bad like hurt somebody or steal something
24:39 | or get secret information , whatever when it's finished .
24:43 | Sometimes the team member will say uh , it's been
24:48 | taken care of . Why do they use passive voice
24:51 | in that sentence in like an action movie ? Why
24:54 | ? Like it's been taken care of . There's no
24:57 | I did it . There's no responsibility . They just
25:00 | want to report that task is done , it's completed
25:04 | . So this is a very common expression , uh
25:08 | , in media , in my care . Okay .
25:11 | All right . Um , Ansarullah huge run says ,
25:17 | can I stay ? The story was written by ali
25:19 | ? Yes , you can . Okay . Um ,
25:23 | lots of people are saying happy birthday , thanks very
25:25 | much , everybody . Thanks . Okay , let's go
25:29 | to the next situation . We just have two more
25:32 | . Next one . I included here is about food
25:36 | . So when you're eating something and you're drinking something
25:40 | and you want to comment , you want to share
25:42 | some comment about the food or about the cooking .
25:45 | How can you do that ? So active voice ?
25:48 | Maybe you cooked something and you think uh , I
25:52 | used too much salt . I used too much salt
25:55 | . It's my fault . It was me passive voice
25:58 | . You can say too much salt was used too
26:02 | much salt was used . Okay . I included a
26:06 | note right here in a sentence like this . You
26:11 | might hear like when you go to a restaurant .
26:14 | Native speakers use they as the subject like this sentence
26:19 | . So this note says they is sometimes used as
26:23 | the subject to make an active sentence like this .
26:26 | They use too much salt . This they we use
26:31 | when we don't know the specific person . For example
26:35 | , when you go to a restaurant and you don't
26:37 | know exactly who did something , but you want to
26:41 | talk about the restaurant . Generally we use they to
26:47 | do that instead of this restaurant used too much salt
26:51 | or this place used too much salt . We use
26:54 | they they do that . So you might hear this
26:58 | as an active voice sentence again because the speaker wants
27:02 | to emphasize uh at the restaurant . Okay . Um
27:08 | All right . Everyone that's right . No more questions
27:12 | now . Everybody's just writing nice messages . Okay ,
27:14 | let's go to our last one then . your last
27:16 | one when your internet connection dies . I want to
27:19 | end with the computer expression because computers use a lot
27:23 | of passive voice notifications . Okay . So when your
27:27 | internet connection dies , when your internet connection dies ,
27:31 | so your internet goes out , What happens ? Active
27:34 | voice ? Your computer ? Uh I'm sorry my computer
27:38 | lost its connection . My computer lost its connection .
27:42 | Active voice , passive voice . The connection was lost
27:46 | , the connection was lost . So this one in
27:51 | this sentence you express . It was the computer the
27:53 | computer was the problem passive voice . We don't know
27:57 | exactly what the problem was . Maybe it was my
28:00 | computer . Maybe it was my network . We don't
28:02 | know . Okay . But note here , last note
28:06 | for today , computer notifications often use passive . So
28:10 | short messages are very common like connection lost or file
28:16 | saved or database updated these kinds of things . So
28:20 | passive is used a lot with computers . If you
28:24 | use your computer in english which is a great way
28:26 | to study by the way , you will probably see
28:29 | these something like this every day . Okay . All
28:34 | right , good . So these are a few situations
28:38 | where you might think about the differences between active and
28:41 | passive . I know it seems kind of simple but
28:45 | making good choices between active and passive really helps you
28:50 | in making good relationships with people . Like you can
28:53 | protect other people's feelings in difficult times . You can
28:57 | take responsibility in positive times . So it's really important
29:02 | to know how to choose between the two . It
29:05 | will help you sound a lot more fluid . Okay
29:08 | . Alright great . So I have to finish up
29:11 | there I think . Yes it is time for me
29:12 | to go . So I'll show you next week's lesson
29:16 | information once more to here's today's lesson boards . If
29:19 | you want to take a look , take a screenshot
29:21 | . But we talked about active voice and passive voice
29:24 | . The difference , we talked about a lot of
29:27 | situations where you need to choose between active and passive
29:32 | and a couple of common examples uh that you might
29:36 | hear like uh the last one I talked about the
29:39 | action movie , it's been taken care of . Okay
29:42 | , thanks everybody for all the nice birthday messages .
29:45 | I really appreciate it . That's super , super nice
29:47 | . Okay . Someone wrote passive voice . Your birthday
29:51 | is being commemorated , awesome . Thank you everybody .
29:53 | That's super , super nice . Uh I have to
29:56 | go but I'll be back next week , next week's
29:59 | lesson , but I'm next week will be april 14th

30:34 | We're going to practice using too much , too many
30:37 | , not enough enough , those kinds of things .
30:40 | We're going to cover . Um this topic that comes
30:43 | up every day . Super , super common topics .
30:46 | So please join me again next week for this lesson
30:49 | . Okay ? So I have to go for this
30:52 | week , but thank you very very much for joining
