00:03 | Uh huh . If you've been learning math for a
00:07 | while then you probably already know a thing or two
00:09 | about fractions . And if you've ever had to uh
00:12 | break a cookie and have to share with a friend
00:14 | but then you have used fractions in real life .
00:16 | Oh well thank you . That's because fractions are used
00:22 | to represent smaller pieces or parts of things . When
00:26 | you're first learning about fractions , it can help to
00:28 | draw pictures to see how they work . So let's
00:30 | start by drawing a circle . Now this circle represents
00:32 | what we call a whole . Now not the kind
00:35 | of hole you can fall into more like a hairy
00:37 | cookie or a whole pizza . Now if we divide
00:41 | that circle or whole amount into four parts then we
00:44 | call each of those parts of fraction of the original
00:47 | whole circle . Because this is math and not art
00:49 | , we can't just keep on drawing pictures . We
00:52 | need to learn how to write out fractions . Using
00:54 | the language of math , yep . You guessed it
00:56 | ? That means using numbers unlike a regular number to
01:00 | write a fraction , you need two numbers , one
01:02 | number on top , one , number on bottom and
01:04 | a line between them . I'll explain exactly what the
01:07 | lions for later in the video . But for now
01:10 | let's figure out what those two numbers mean . Remember
01:13 | fractions are used to represent parts of something and the
01:15 | number on the bottom tells us how many parts that
01:18 | something is divided into . The number on top tells
01:21 | us how many of those parts we have . Yeah
01:27 | , for example , let's write a fraction for our
01:30 | drawing here . I divided the circle into four parts
01:32 | . Right ? So the number on the bottom will
01:35 | be four and I still have all four of those
01:37 | parts . So the number on top will also be
01:39 | four . I have four out of four parts .
01:42 | That means I still have a whole circle . But
01:45 | what if somebody came by and took away one part
01:47 | from the circle ? Well the circle still divided into
01:50 | four parts . So the bottom number would still be
01:53 | four . But I only have three of those parts
01:55 | left . So that means the top number will change
01:58 | to three . So I have 3/4 or 3/4 of
02:02 | a circle . Makes sense so far good . Let's
02:05 | try another example . Let's say that I divide the
02:08 | rectangle up into eight parts and I give you three
02:11 | of those parts . Since the total number of parts
02:14 | is eight , the bottom number will be eight .
02:17 | And since you have three of those parts , the
02:19 | top number will be three . So the fraction I'm
02:22 | giving you is 3/8 or 3/8 of the rectangle .
02:27 | No no no no need to think oh and it's
02:31 | important to remember that for fractions to work right ?
02:34 | The parts that you divide the whole up into have
02:36 | to be equal . We can't like we'll take a
02:39 | candy bar and say I'm going to divide it into
02:42 | two parts . So this is your half and here's
02:46 | my half . Mm . Let's look at a few
02:51 | more examples . So you can really see the pattern
02:53 | of how fractions can represent parts of objects . This
02:56 | rectangle is divided up into three equal parts and two
02:59 | of them are shaded red . So to over three
03:03 | or 2/3 of the rectangle is shaded red . The
03:07 | circle is divided into 12 equal parts . And seven
03:10 | of those parts are shaded green . So 7/12 or
03:14 | 7/12 of the circle is shaded green . The hexagon
03:17 | is divided into six equal parts and five of those
03:20 | parts are shaded blue . So 5/6 or 5/6 of
03:25 | the hexagon is shaded blue . Mhm . All right
03:28 | , so you can see how fractions can be used
03:30 | to represent parts of objects , like circles and rectangles
03:34 | , but fractions can be used for more than that
03:36 | . They can be used to represent parts of Well
03:39 | , anything like like pets , for example , let's
03:43 | say you have seven pets . Four dogs , two
03:45 | cats and a big fat hamburger . Well , that
03:48 | means that 4/7 or 4/7 of your pets are dogs
03:52 | , and to over seven or 2/7 of your pets
03:55 | are cats , And 1/7 or 1/7 of your pets
03:59 | are hamsters . It also means that your house probably
04:02 | smells like a pet store . Okay , so fractions
04:05 | can be used to represent anything from parts of a
04:09 | circle . Two kitty cats , did you know that
04:11 | fractions can also be used to represent things . You
04:13 | can't even see . Well , like a test score
04:15 | for example , Let's say you take a math test
04:18 | and there's 20 questions on the test and you get
04:21 | 17 of those questions , right ? That means that
04:24 | you've got 17/20 or 17.20th . Some of the questions
04:28 | . Right ? All right . So that's the basic
04:31 | idea of how fractions can be used to represent parts
04:33 | of things , but there's a lot more to fractions
04:35 | in that . In the next section , we're going
04:38 | to be looking at some of the other things we
04:39 | can do with fractions . But before that , let's
04:41 | review fractions are used to represent parts of a whole
04:45 | . Fractions are written in the form of a top
04:47 | number over a bottom number with a line between them
04:51 | . The bottom number represents how many parts the whole
04:54 | is divided into , and the top number represents how
04:57 | many of those parts you have . And finally ,
05:00 | the parts that a whole is divided up into must
05:02 | be equal for fractions to work right to really understand
05:06 | how fractions are used to represent parts of things .
05:08 | Be sure to do the exercises , and I'll see
