Realism in art began in France in the 19th century. Realism artists believed in trying to represent objective reality without exaggeration or beautification. The realists rejected imaginative and theatrical art and attempted to show ordinary life as it was actually lived, including people at work or engaged in everyday tasks. The two aspects of realistic art are: creating art that resembles reality as closely as possible, and creating art that does not idealize or smooth over the rougher aspects of life, including poverty, fear, and despair.
