Beatrice was so excited. This was truly a special day for her. She looked down and saw her cup sparkling with clean and cold water. She couldn't believe it was real; she had never seen water like that before. She slowly took a sip, and it tasted fresh. Her mother always told her how important water is.

The only way that Beatrice could get her water in the past was from the dirty water in a ditch not far from her home. Otherwise, they would have to walk for miles to reach other areas that had water. The water there could have been cleaner, too. In fact, most of the time, this water had a horrible smell and was brownish in color. Beatrice and her family knew it wasn't great, but they had no choice. The water they drank from was contaminated, making Beatrice feel sick often.

They mostly use water from streams, rivers, and lakes for cooking, bathing, and washing clothes. This water is contaminated by chemicals in their products and can cause diseases such as typhus, cholera, dysentery, and malaria.
