The way that Venus fly trap plants are able to catch insects is remarkable when a plant is hungry it keeps one or more of its traps open it then sends out a sweet smell that insects mistaken for pollen this scent encourages bugs to come near the plant, a Venus Fly Trap is able to “feel” when an object touches it, the trigger hairs are very sensitive and can detect something on the trap, as soon as they feel the object, the hairs bend snapping the trap shut in less than one second. The trap doesn’t close all the way instantly though. It stays partly open to allow smaller insects to escape. This is so that the plant doesn’t waste its time eating small bugs that won’t give it enough nutrients to survive.
