Skunks are omnivores. Omnivores eat both plants and animals. Skunks can be found eating nuts, berries, roots, leaves, grasses and even some types of fungi (mushroom-like plants). They also enjoy dining on rodents such as mice and rats, insects, earthworms, frogs, lizards, toads and birds. Sometimes they are unable to find live animals to eat. Skunks become scavengers eating dead animals left behind. Skunks live close to people’s homes. Skunks sometimes will even get into trashcans to eat garbage.

How can the underlined sentences be combined so that their meaning is preserved?
