Read the background information, then answer the question in an extended response. In 1830, President Andrew Jackson passed the Indian Removal Act. This law stated that Native Americans must move west of the Mississippi River and allow white settlers to take their land. U.S. soldiers were sent to remove the Native Americans by force and march them west. Many thousands of Native Americans died on this journey, which became known in history as “The Trail of Tears”.

Explain how an encyclopedia article written about this historic event would differ from a first-hand account of the event written by one of the Native Americans who experienced the Trail of Tears. What is the purpose of each type of source (encyclopedia vs. first-hand account)?
