Read the background information, then answer the question in an extended response. In 1830, President Andrew Jackson passed the Indian Removal Act. This law stated that Native Americans must move west of the Mississippi River and allow white settlers to take their land. U.S. soldiers were sent to remove the Native Americans by force and march them west. Many thousands of Native Americans died on this journey, which became known in history as “The Trail of Tears”.
