Read the passage and answer the question.

(1) The human body is made up of trillions of cells. Cells are the basic units of all living things. Each cell is surrounded by a cell membrane, which holds the cell together and controls what goes into and out of the cell. The nucleus, containing DNA, serves as the control center of the cell. The cytoplasm, a jelly-like fluid outside the nucleus, houses other organelles of the cell. Each type of cell performs a specific function. For example, red blood cells carry oxygen to all parts of the body, while white blood cells work to fight infections. Groups of cells that work together are called tissues.

(2) Four types of tissues are formed as cells join and function as a group. Each type of tissue has a distinctive structure and performs a specific job. Muscle tissue is composed of long and narrow muscle cells that enable body parts to move by contracting and relaxing. Connective tissue supports the body and connects its parts together; for example, bones are made up of connective tissue. Nerve tissue consists of long nerve cells that branch throughout the body, carrying messages. Epithelial tissue is composed of wide, flat epithelial cells and lines the internal surfaces of the body, forming the outer layer of the skin. Groups of tissues come together to form organs in our body, such as the heart, liver, lungs, brain, and kidneys. These organs then collaborate to form our body systems, each system working in complete coordination with others.
